The Kinabalu International School (KIS) is owned and operated by the
KIS Association of Parents. When a family enrolls their child in the
school, both parents automatically gain membership to this Association.
Each year an Annual General Meeting is held to elect eight
representatives from within the Association of Parents to act as the
school’s Board of Management. In doing so, the Association attempts to
elect Board Members from a wide cross section of the school’s
international community so that everyone’s interests are being
represented.
The school Principal and teaching staff are employed by the Board
of Management and manage the day-to-day operation of the school. In
turn, the Board of Management, act on behalf of the Association and
oversee the overall operation of the school. The Board of
Management meets on a monthly basis (more often when required) with the
school’s Principal to manage the overall aims of the school, it’s
development planning, and school finances.
Unlike some schools, which are profit oriented, all school fees
are put back into KIS to the total benefit of the pupils. Similarly,
through this form of ownership and management by the
Association of Parents, the interests of the whole school
community at any one time are the primary concern of the
Board of Management; thus the pupils’ interests are always at
the forefront of any action that is taken by the school.
