The school day for pupils in the Primary Department begins at 7.50am and ends at 2.00pm.  Parents may collect their child at 2.00pm. However, if your child is remaining after school for a club, they will be looked after by a member of staff until clubs start at 2.10pm.  Parents can then collect their children at 3.10pm. If for some reason, your child is to be collected by someone else, then please inform the class teacher in writing on the day or telephone the office so that a message can be passed on.

Pupils have a ‘Play Break’ and a ‘Lunch Break’ during the course of the day. Children are to provide their own meals and drinks as the school does not have a canteen. Those pupils involved in sports practices or House Competitions during their breaks, should bring the PE gear to wear at this time.

Subjects Taught

Subjects that are covered in the Primary Department are English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Physical Education, Swimming, Information & Communications Technology (ICT), Design Technology, Bahasa Malaysia, Art and Music.

Assessments

The purpose of assessments is to help inform teachers of a pupil’s progress and to help decide on future planning of the pupil’s programme of study. Informal assessment is on going throughout the year for each class in the Primary Department.

Baseline Assessments are used for all pupils at the age of five.

Running records for reading are taken on a regular basis with each child individually in Year 1 to 5. Topic tests are often set at the end of the topic of study.

Mid-year formalised assessments are held for all pupils in Year 3 to 5. These normally take the form of standardised NFER tests in English and mathematics.

Year 2 and 6 pupils sit the UK National Curriculum Tests (SATs) each year. Year 3 – 5 sit the Optional Assessments that compliment the Year 2 & 6 SATs.

Homework

Homework assignments considered appropriate to the child’s age and ability are set for all pupils. It should be noted that homework assignments are frequently set to consolidate previously learned work and do not necessarily reflect the work done that day.

Clubs are organised by parents and teachers after school from Tuesday to Friday. These are available to pupils from Year 2 and above. Registration for these clubs takes place at the beginning of each term. Pupils are encouraged to join these clubs, but it is not compulsory.
